How to Study

Quiz yourself. Don't reread.

Miss the cutoff and you typically wait 6 to 12 months.

1. Active Recall

Active Recall

Why it moves rank

The Applicant Waiting List is ranked by what you can still retrieve after the booklet is gone. Highlighting feels productive. It does not move rank.

Worked example

Cover the line, then write the fact

Workplace line: "All hot-work permits require a fire watch for at least 30 minutes after welding is complete." Cover it. The fact you should be able to write: 30 minutes.

Try it

Read, then hide

Read this workplace line. You will answer from memory.

All hot-work permits require a fire watch for at least 30 minutes after welding or cutting is complete. The fire watch must have an appropriate extinguisher within arm's reach. Combustible materials must be moved at least 35 feet from the work area, or covered with fire-resistant blankets. If the area cannot be made safe, hot work must not proceed.

2. Spaced Repetition

Spaced Repetition

Why it moves rank

Miss a local cutoff and you typically wait 6 to 12 months for the next cycle. One Saturday cram fades before that date. Short reviews on a schedule hold the score that sets rank.

Worked example

Work it today. Review when it starts to slip.

Today: 1/4 + 3/8. Common denominator is 8, so 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8. If that was easy, review in a few days. If it was shaky, review tomorrow. Do not wait until the week of the test.

What is 1/4 + 3/8? Same item as the fractions guide. No calculator.

3. Interleaving

Interleaving

Why it moves rank

Test booklets mix types. Blocked drills hide the step that costs time: picking the method. Slow method-picking on test day costs points that move waitlist rank.

Worked example

Name the method before you compute

3/8 + 1/4 is fractions (common denominator). Area of a 5 by 12 rectangle is geometry (length times width). 15% of 240 is percentages. Same session, three methods, then compute.

Name the method

What type is each problem? Tap the method before you would compute.

Convert 7/20 to a decimal.

Volume of a box: 4 × 3 × 5?

What is 40% of 90?

4. Deliberate Practice

Deliberate Practice

Why it moves rank

Waitlist rank follows your weakest skill area. Hours on a strong section do not pull you up the list. The diagnostic exists so tonight's hour goes where the cutoff is at risk.

Worked example

One hour, one weak score

Mock diagnostic: Reading Comprehension 85, Math 62, Mechanical Abilities 78, Figure Visualization 71. Tonight's hour goes to Math. Reading Comprehension gets a short review later in the week, not another full session.

Mock diagnostic. You have one hour tonight. Which skill area gets it?

Mechanical Abilities78%

5. Deep Work

Deep Work

Why it moves rank

The sitting is long. Split attention in study does not build the focus that holds a chart or a fraction in hour three, when rank is won or lost.

Worked example

One block, one skill, phone in another room

Twenty-five minutes on fractions. Five minutes off. Not three apps and a highlight pass. The test will not pause for a notification.

Timed glance

You get 8 seconds with a shop chart. Then it hides. Answer from memory. Phone down.
