Workplace Documents: The Document Stays With You
This is a different kind of reading test. Unlike retention-style reading comprehension, the document stays in front of you the whole time. The challenge isn't remembering. It's catching every condition buried in the fine print.
How This Section Differs from Reading Comp
Retention-style Reading Comprehension takes the passage away before you answer. Workplace Documents (used by WorkKeys-style locals) keeps the document in front of you. That sounds easier, and in one way it is, but the questions adjust. They stop testing memory and start testing whether you caught every qualifier.
Reading Comprehension
Memory-heavy
Read, passage removed, answer from memory. Rewards retention techniques. You study the passage like you're about to be quizzed on it, because you are.
Workplace Documents
Precision-heavy
Document stays. You answer with it open. Rewards careful re-reading: especially spotting the one “unless” clause, the exact threshold, or the AND vs OR that flips the right answer.
The Trigger Words That Matter
These are the words that change an answer. When you scan a document, your eye should snag on every one of them.
Hard Rules: No Exceptions
These words mean there's no wiggle room. If the document says “apprentices must be supervised,” any answer that allows unsupervised work is wrong, even if nothing else in the document conflicts.
Carve-Out Words: Exceptions to the Rule
These words create a specific exception. Miss the carve-out and you'll apply a rule where it doesn't belong. “Retrieval harness required unless the space is less than 5 ft deep” has a very different answer for a 4-ft space than for a 15-ft space.
Threshold Words: Exact Numbers Matter
Numbers in documents are never decorative. “Within 30 minutes” excludes 31 minutes. “At least two” excludes one. “Whichever comes first” picks the stricter threshold. Treat these like programmer boundary conditions: the off-by-one matters.
Sample: Work Order
The document stays in front of you. Circle the trigger words: must, prior to, and, no exceptions, before you answer.
